Utah Physical Therapy Association

Continuing Education

The Physical Therapy Practice Act of 2009 has passed the legislature and only requires the Governor’s signature to make it official. As of the licensure year of 2011, all licensed physical therapist and physical therapist assistants will be required to receive continuing education hours to renew their license (You are not required to have this requirement for this licensure cycle coming in May 2009).

Here are the specifics:

During the two year license period of 2009 through 2010….

  • Physical therapists must receive 40 CEU hours to renew their license.
  • Physical therapist Assistants must receive 20 CEU hours to renew their newly acquired license.

CEU hours can be acquired in various ways which include:

  • Attend Spring (8 CEU’s) and Annual (fall 12 CEU’s) Conference for a total of 20 hours per year.
  • Attend APTA sponsored continuing education courses.
  • Participate in a Journal Club or departmental in-service for up to 5 hours of CEU.
  • Publish an article in a journal.
  • Become a Board Certified Therapist in a Specialized area (OCS, NCS, SCS, GCS, ECS, etc.)
  • Participate in an APTA Home Study Course.
  • Receive more education in a doctoral program.
  • Many other options depending on your situation.

A percentage of all the licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants will be randomly checked to confirm the CEU’s. A worksheet will be placed on the web site that can be downloaded by Spring Conference to track your hours. Please read the specific rules listed on the web site.

Our goal is to encourage a fair amount of continuing education each licensure cycle for all professionals without requiring a unrealistic amount for those that may be licensed but temporarily out of the work force. Please email me at stevec@handandortho.com if you have questions.
